[Stamp] 2010 | Lithuania • 20th Anniversary of the Restoration of Independence



Lithuania commemorates 20th anniversary of the restoration of independence, which happened on 11th of March 1990 when the Supreme Council of the Republic of Lithuania adopted legal acts and political decisions proclaiming the re-establishment of an independent state of Lithuania.

After restoration of its independence Lithuania reintroduced old and created new state symbols and revived the institution of the President. Human rights and freedom of word came into force, the independent radio and TV stations were created, the formation of the national defence system was started, the processes of privatisation initiated, Bank of Lithuania was established, national currency – Litas – was introduced. Lithuania returned to the market economy, affiliated diplomatic relations with other countries, etc.

During the period of Independence Lithuania was recognized de jure, accepted to the United Nations Organization and the International Olympic Committee. Lithuania also joined the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, became the member of the Council of Europe, the European Union, and North Atlantic Treaty Organization and entered into the Schengen Area, the group of European countries that have abolished border controls between each other.

The 11th of March 1990 gave to Lithuania, as an independent state, a chance to return to the free world.
