การประกวดตราสัญลักษณ์ในครั้งนี้ เนื่องในโอกาสสวนสัตว์สงขลากำลังเร่งพัฒนายุทธศาสตร์ด้านการประชาสัมพันธ์ เชิงรุกและประชาสัมพันธ์กิจกรรมใหม่ ๆ ที่กำลังจะเกิดขึ้น เช่น การให้บริการสวนน้ำ การให้อาหารเสือและ การแสดงความสามารถของสัตว์รูปแบบใหม่ เพื่อสร้างนวัตกรรมใหม่และภาพลักษณ์ใหม่ด้านการให้บริการสอดคล้องกับวิสัย ทัศน์ขององค์การที่ว่า "เป็นสถาบันอนุรักษ์และให้บริการองค์ความรู้ด้านสัตว์ป่าระดับสากล"

สวนสัตว์สงขลาเปิดดำเนินการมาแล้ว 12 ปี โดยมีภารกิจหลักดังนี้

1. จัดระบบการให้การศึกษา เพื่อรองรับการบริการอย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ และสอดคล้องกับหลักสูตรของแผนการศึกษาแห่งชาติ

2. ส่งเสริมให้มีการอนุรักษ์ ขยายพันธุ์สัตว์ และวิจัยด้านสัตว์ป่า

3. พัฒนาสวนสัตว์ให้เป็นแหล่งท่องเที่ยวเชิงนิเวศ เพื่อบริหารให้กับนักท่องเที่ยวทั้งในประเทศและต่างประเทศ

หลักเกณฑ์การออกแบบไม่จำกัดสี ไม่จำกัดรูปแบบ และตัวอักษร สัตว์เด่นของสวนสัตว์สงขลาคือ "นกเงือกและสมเสร็จ" ผู้ส่งผลงานเข้า ประกวดสามารถนำสัตว์ชนิดอื่นมาประกอบได้ และต้องมีคำว่า "Songkhla Zoo" อยู่ในตราสัญลักษณ์ด้วย

หลักเกณฑ์ในการส่งผลงานเข้าร่วมประกวด ผลงานต้องพิมพ์แบบ 4 สี ลงบนกระดาษขนาด A3 ติดลงบนแผ่นฟิวเจอร์บอร์ด พร้อม CD บรรจุไฟล์ผลงานการออกแบบความละเอียด 300 dpi ขึ้นไป ในรูปแบบนามสกุล .ai หรือ .psd (ไฟล์ที่ส่งมาต้องสามารถ แก้ไขได้) แต่ละแบบต้องมีเอกสารประกอบเป็นคำอธิบายความหมายองค์ประกอบต่าง ๆ ในแบบนั้น ๆ รวมถึง ชื่อ นามสกุล อีเมล และหมายเลขโทรศัพท์ของผู้ออกแบบ รวมทั้งระบุว่าคุณเห็นข่าวการประกวดนี้จากสื่อใด สามารถสมัครและส่งภาพ เข้าประกวดได้ตั้งแต่วันที่ 1 มกราคม 2554 จนถึง วันที่ 5 กุมภาพันธ์ 2554

การดูนกในประเทศไทย เริ่มต้นขึ้นในราวปี พ.ศ.2505 โดยชาวต่างประเทศที่รักการดูนก และเข้ามาอาศัยอยู่ในประเทศไทยชั่วคราว ได้จัดตั้ง Bangkok Bird Club(BBC) ขึ้น โดยมีนายเอ็ดเวิด ซี ดิคคินสัน (Mr.E.C. Dickinson) เป็นเลขาธิการกิติมศักดิ์ เพื่อรวมกลุ่มนักดูนกทั้งมืออาชีพและสมัครเล่น รวมทั้งนักปักษีวิทยา ชาวไทยและชาวต่างประเทศให้มาศึกษา เกี่ยวกับนกในประเทศไทยอย่างจริงจัง มีบางท่านมาทำการค้นคว้า วิจัย สำรวจ เกี่ยวกับชนิดของนกในประเทศไทยมีการใส่ปลอก ขานก (banding) เพื่อหาข้อมูลการเคลื่อนย้ายถิ่นของนก เช่น Dr.Elliot McClure, Mr. H.G. Deignan. อาจารย์พิไล พูลสวัสดิ์, Dr.Joe T. Marshall, Mr.Ben King เป็นต้น มีการออกไปดูนกตามสถานที่ต่างๆและประชุมแลกเปลี่ยนข่าวสาร เกี่ยวกับนก และการอนุรักษ์ธรรมชาติเป็นประจำ

พ.ศ.2529 สมาชิกได้ร่วมกันจัดตั้งกลุ่มคณะทำงานชั่วคราว และเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น ชมรมดูนกกรุงเทพ มีการประชุมคณะทำงาน ออกวารสารและนำสมาชิกดูนกนอกสถานที่เป็นประจำทุกเดือน อีกทั้งได้มีสมาชิกเข้าร่วมกิจกรรมของชมรมฯ ด้านต่างๆ มากขึ้น คณะทำงานจึงได้ร่างกฎระเบียบ ของชมรมฯ เพื่อใช้เป็นแนวทางในการปฏิบัติและบริหารงานของชมรมฯ เนื่องจากชมรมฯ อาจจะเติบโตขึ้น ต่อไปในอนาคต โดยจัดให้มีการเลือกตั้งประธานและเลขาธิการของชมรมฯ ในวันที่ 28 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2530

นพ.บุญส่ง เลขะกุล ได้ร่วมกิจกรรมกับชมรมฯมาด้วยตลอด จนกล่าวได้ว่า ท่านเป็นบิดาแห่งการอนุรักษ์นกและธรรมชาติของประเทศไทย

จากการดำเนินกิจกรรมต่างๆ ที่ผ่านมาของชมรมดูนกกรุงเทพ พบว่า นกที่เคยมีอยู่มากมายในประเทศ ไทยเมื่อครั้งในอดีต ได้ลดจำนวนลงไปอย่างรวดเร็ว จนพบเห็นได้ยากขึ้น หลายชนิดสูญหายไปด้วยภัยจาก การล่าและดักจับประกอบกับสภาพธรรมชาติอัน เป็นแหล่งอาศัยที่เคยสมบูรณ์ ได้ถูกทำลายลง ถ้าหากไม่มีการ ดำเนินการอนุรักษ์อย่างจริงจังและทันท่วงที นกจำนวนมากคงต้องสูญพันธุ์ไปในที่สุด ดังนั้น เพื่อให้การ ดำเนินการอนุรักษ์นก ตลอดจนแหล่งอาศัยในธรรมชาติ มีประสิทธิภาพสมตามความมุ่งหมาย ชมรมดูนก กรุงเทพ จึงได้พัฒนาองค์กรจัดตั้งเป็น สมาคมอนุรักษ์นกและธรรมชาติแห่งประเทศไทย (Bird Conservation Society of Thailand) โดยได้รับอนุญาตและจดทะเบียนถูกต้องตามกฎหมาย ตั้งแต่วันที่ 12 กรกฎาคม พ.ศ. 2536 เป็นต้นมา และในเดือนพฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. 2539 ได้ลงนามเป็นภาคี สมาชิกขององค์กรอนุรักษ์นกสากล (Full Partner of BirdLife International)
